Pete Struve and Rany Johnson - Jockey Short Dance ContestPeterMixt Music

DYAO ButtonI was one of the early nightclub DJs in the San Francisco Disco scene. I trained in 1973 with Chico Starr and Steve Newman at California's first licensed dance nightclub, the Rendezvous. Chico taught me soul, Steven taught me tech. While still green, in early 1974, I was invited to join the DJ family at the new South of Market club, the Endup.

While in SF I DJed at the: Rendezvous, In Touch, Endup, Dance Your Ass Off, Ramada at the Wharf and the Polk Gulch Saloon.

In the 80s and 90s in LA I DJed at the: Arena, Gauntlet live events and conventions in the Southern California area.

In SF, I made 10 inch reel tapes for bars in the SF Castro and the Russian River. The mid 70's I built and managed plus DJed -- Dance Your Ass Off. While at DYAO, I was featured in Rolling Stone Magazine and was included in the Rolling Stone book, Dancing Madness.

While at the Endup, I DJed for Randy Johnson's "Jockey Shorts Contest".  We are seen to the right as Randy and I posed at the door of the Endup.

During my years in SF I was involved with Bruce Tronson Sound building sound systems for clubs and providing mobile sound on parade floats. I also worked with McCune Sound part time during the 70s.

In the late 70s I was introduced to Disconet Subscription service and Mike Wilkerson. I was in the right place at the right time to get my hands on the first two import copies of Viola Wills, If You Could Read My Mind. With them I created the 13:09 version of "If You Could Read ..." for Disconet.

I also teamed with Steve Newman creating the West Coast underground mix of Chic, "Le Freak" which played on San Francisco's K101 radio and in clubs from Los Angeles to Seattle. In late 1981.

I moved home to Southern California and in January 1982.

Throughout the mid 80's and 90's I did mobile and special events DJ projects in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

Working again in the late 80's with McCune Sound of San Francisco, I managed sound operations for several Southern California Hotel properties.

Finally I became operations manager for McCune's Central Coast operations. My final live DJ gig was for the AALA Roundup in Los Angeles at the Universal Sheraton Hotel, the "Loading Dock Disco" on Saturday night May 25th, 2002.

I then donated most of my music library to a new an upcoming LA DJ. As a DJ before me had done, I passed much (but not all) of my vinyl onto the next generation. Over the decade of 2000, I made a fancy living doing photography of motion picture memorabilia.
